Cheat Code Enter Method

Is there some trick to entering the codes? I tried them on the MAin Menu page, as instructed, but no sound confirmation. Nothing changed on the game. I also tried using the triggers for "left" & "right" and also holding both triggers while entering the codes by the directional pad. None of these worked. I also tried entering under the pause menu but nothing changed. Any suggestions?
