The Story B. The Basics 1) Switches 2) Elevators/ Lifts 3) Miscellaneous C. The Controls =============================== A. The Story =============================== Ok. Here we go. It all starts with two brothers, Sumner and Garm, who are both very, very powerful mages. Garm is the younger, weaker, jealous one, and Sumner is the older, stronger, smarter one. Sumner reigned over the eight realms, and for many years the land prospered under Sumner's guidance. Sumner's Tower had many portals in each realm so Sumner could travel easily throughout his land. Garm was tired of living in his brothers footsteps, so he secretly studied the whereabouts of the mystical thirteen Runestones, that could be used to control evil demons from the Underworld. After years of study, he found the location of twelve of the thirteen Runestones, and retrieved them. One day, when Sumner was traveling the land away from his Tower, Garm used the twelve Runestones to summon the ancient demon Skorne from the Underworld. Lacking the power from the thirteenth Runestone, Skorne broke free of Garm's spell. Skorne crushed and killed Garm and locked his soul away in the Underworld. Sensing that something was wrong, Sumner returned to his Tower, only to find what horrifying things that had happened. The magic portals were being used to quickly transport Skorne's minions to the lands to bring about destruction. Using all his strength, Sumner sealed all of the portals shut, and faught back the demon Skorne. Even with his magnificant power, Skorne was no match for Sumner and his magical abilities. Skorne fled to an ancient temple, which he sealed with eight shards. These eight shards all together created a magical stained glass window that was the only entrance to his temple. Skorne called forth his eight most powerful minions and gave each of them a shard. Skorne then sent these minions, along with their legends of weaker minions, to each realm. He ordered them to guard their shard with their life. Sumner was exhausted and didn't have the strength to continue the quest to defeat Skorne, so with his last of his power, he summoned the strongest hero from each realm. To these eight heroes, he entrusted the tasks of defeating Skorne's minions, killing Skorne, banishing him to the Underworld for eternity, and confronting Garm. The fate of the land is in their hands. =============================== B. The Basics =============================== Here I'm going to explain the everyday obvious parts of GDL. ------------------------------- 1. Switches ------------------------------- There are three kinds of switches. There are switches on the ground, levers on walls, and targets on walls. Unactivated switches are colored red, and activated ones are colored green. To activate a switch on the ground, simply run over it, and you will activate it. To activate a levers on walls, stand next to it, and your character will pull down the lever. To activate targets, you must shoot them using the (-A-) Button or the (-X-) Button. Targets look exactly like bullseyes. ------------------------------- 2. Elevators/Lifts ------------------------------- Elevators and lifts are used to transport someone from one floor to another, obviously. Many elevators are well hidden so it may take some SERIOUS effort to find them. Some lifts have multi-colored arrows pointing inward to easily indicate where you need to stand to activate it. For some elevators/lifts, you may have to stand on them for a few seconds before they finally activate, so be patient! Hidden elevators/lifts often lead to an important item or area in a level, so if you're lucky enough to find one, be on the lookout for a rare or important item. ------------------------------- 3. Miscellaneous ------------------------------- If you press the A Button (-A-) you will accept any message and/or proceed to the next screen. If you press the B Button (-B-) you will cancel any message and/or retreat to the previous screen. If you run over any item, (ex. Treasure, Fire Amulet, Coin) you will pick it up. Key Rings contain two to three keys. You can have no more than nine keys on your keyring and no more than nine potions on your belt. You must have a key to open a chest or a locked door. If you shoot brown barrels, there may be something or someone inside. If you shoot a green barrel, a small cloud of poison gas will come out, and won't go away for a while. If you have a gas mask on, poison gas will be ineffective, and you can freely walk through poison gas. If you shoot red barrels, a small explosion will explode from the barrel. =============================== C. Press start on your controller, and depending on which port your controller is in, you'll see the texts "New" and "Load" in the center of your column. If you wish to start a whole new game, select "New". If you wish to continue a current game, select "Load". -If you selected "New", your column will go to a screen that has the class of the character, the stats of the character, and a picture of the character. (See the Character Section for more details) Cycle through the eight different types of characters by pressing the (LHJ) left or right. To cycle through the colors for each class, press up or down on the (LHJ). When you have found the right class and color that you wish to use in your journey, press the A button, and you can begin naming your character. Press up or down on the (LHJ) to scroll through the letters and numbers to create a name for your character. Once you have created the name you wish to use, press the A button. If you did not enter any name, and immediately pressed the A button, your name will be TRAVIS... For some odd reason... After you press the A button, you will hear a deep voice say "Welcome [your color] [your class]!" (ex. "Welcome Yellow Valkyrie!") After that, you will be transported to Sumner's Tower. -If you selected "Load", your column will show the names of currently saved games on your XBOX Hard Disk. Select your name, and your column will show the class of your character, the stats of your character, a picture of your character, and the name of your character. Meanwhile, you hear a deep voice say "Welcome back [your color] [your class]!" (ex. "Welcome back Red Archer!") After that, you will be transported to Sumner's Tower. If you selected "Options" at the main screen, there are four options you can chooses from: Audio, Game Options, Compass, and Controls. -If you want to adjust the Audio features, select Audio. Here you will be able to increase and decrease the sound and music levels. You can also switch which sound you use, Stereo or Mono. -If you want to play around with GDL's gameplay features, select Game Options. Here you can select the difficulty of your enemies, and toggle the friendly fire. (hehehe =)) You can select three different types of friendly fire: Normal, the default setting, means that friendly fire is OFF. No harm can be dont to players by other players. Shots Stun Other Players means that when a player shoots another player, the player that got shot will freeze for a moment. Shots Hurt Other Players means that when a player shoots another player, it hurts them, and causes damage. In other words this means that friendly fire is ON. -If you want to toggle the Compass in the lower left hand corner on and off, select Compass, and select it on or off. -If you want to see the Controls, select Controls. Here you can select the style of Controls. You can also toggle the Auto Aim and Auto Attack on and off. And, you can select the intensity of rumbling your controller will do. ------------------------------- =============================== III) PLAYING THE GAME =============================== ------------------------------- Areas A. Objectives B. Sumner's Hints C. Options Screen D. Heads Up Display (HUD) E. Portals =============================== A. Objectives =============================== You may think that a game like GDL has no objective, except to kill anything in your way, but it does. =) The whole point of the game is to go around to each realm and kill the boss to get their shard. Along the way you find different colored crystals to open other realms. Also, you keep an eye out for those mystical Runestones. If you see one in a level, don't make it your life's pursuit to get it, you won't need it until later. If you don't get it when you exit a level, don't worry about it. You can always come back. You can also find rare Items of Legend to help you defeat those bosses to get the shards easier. Also, you must find Golden Icons to open up other parts of Sumner's Tower. Once you have killed all eight bosses (with or without the Items of Legend) of the eight realms, the magical stained glass window will be restored. Stand in the light, and you will arrive in Skorne's Desecrated Temple, where you battle Skorne for the first time. Once you beat him, you must go back and retrieve the twelve Runestones. Once done, you can enter the circle of Runestones in front of Sumner's pedestal in Sumner's Tower, and you will be transported to the Underworld to defeat Skorne, yet again. Once you beat him, the Battle Grounds Realm will be open. Conquer that special Realm, and defeat Garm. After that, your conquest will be over, and you have beaten Gauntlet Dark Legacy. Tough task? Nah. Not with me by your side at least. =) Good Luck, and Good Huntin'. =============================== B. Sumner's Hints =============================== Once you reach Sumner's Tower, you start right in front of Sumner, and he'll start talking about God knows what. Anyways, if you go up and stand next to him for about two seconds, a menu will pop up. The options here are: General Hints, Guardians, Items Of Legend, and Runestones. -If you select General Hints, Sumner will tell you general every day hints, like "Kill Archers and Bomb Throwers first" or "Don't eat poison fruit". The obvious. -If you select Guardians, Sumner will tell you about an enemy boss and how to beat him. (Usually which Item of Legend to use) -If you select Items of Legend, Sumner will tell you about an Item of Legend, where its located, and the boss its used against. -If you select Runestones, Sumner will tell you about the next Runestone to be found, what Realm its in, and what level its in. =============================== C. Options Screen =============================== At any time during the game, except while playing a level, you can press (Sta), and a menu will pop up. These are the options: Settings, Manage Character, Shop, Inventory, and Quit Game. -If you select Settings, you will see the options Audio, Compass, and Controls. If you want to adjust the Audio features, select Audio. Here you will be able to increase and decrease the sound and music levels. You can also switch which sound you use, Stereo or Mono. If you want to toggle the Compass in the lower left hand corner on and off, select Compass, and select it on or off. If you want to see the Controls, select Controls. Here you can select the style of Controls. You can also toggle the Auto Aim and Auto Attack on and off. And, you can select the intensity of rumbling your controller will do. -If you select Manage Character, you will return to the four column screen, and you will see the options Save, Change, Load, Quit, and Done If you want to save your game, select Save, and you will save your game to the XBOX Hard Disk. If you want to change your character in any way, (Color, Class, etc.) Go to Manage Character. Here you can change your color and class. If you change your class to ANY different one, will start a whole new game, and begin at level one. If you only change your color, you will not start a new game. If you want to load a previously saved game, select Load. You will then enter a list of saved games, labeled by the character's name. Select one, and you will begin back in Sumner's Tower. If you want to totally quit your game, and go back to the main screen at the beginning of the game, select Quit Game, and you will do so. This will not automatically save your game. If you select Done, you will return back to Sumner's Tower. -If you select Shop, you will return to the four column screen and start shopping. Use (DPu) and (DPd) to scroll through all the items, and press (-A-) to buy it. See Shopping in the Items Section for more details. -If you select Inventory, you will return to the four column screen, and in your column, you will see how many crystals you have for each of the eight realms, how many shards you have from the eight realms, the number of Golden Icons you have, and any Items of Legend that you may have. Once you're done, press (-A-) and you will return to Sumner's Tower. -If you select Quit Game, you will totally quit your game, and return to the main screen at the beginning of the game. This will not automatically save your game. =============================== D. Heads Up Display (HUD) =============================== At the very bottom is your Heads Up Display, or HUD. Your HUD provides necessary information about your character. There are four sections in the HUD. (One for each possible player) Depending on which port your controller is in, your HUD information will be in a section of the HUD. (If your controller is in port 3, your HUD information will be in the third slot from the left. If your controller is in port 2, your HUD information will be in the second slot from the left, etc.) In your section, you will see lots of information regarding your character. The background color of your section of the HUD will vary depending on the color of your character. (If the color of your character is green, the background of your section of the HUD will be green, likewise with blue, yellow, and red.) The name of your character will be right in the middle in all bold and capitolized text. Above that is your Turbo Meter. When your Turbo Meter is full, the whole bar will be red and flashing pink. When your Turbo Meter is showing any red at all, your Turbo Meter is half-full. Above your Turbo Meter are your Runestones. One little gray square with a colored dot in the middle above your Turbo Meter resembles one Runestone. If you have the 13th Runestone, it will be directly to the left of your character's name, between your keys, and your Gold. To the left of your Turbo Meter are your keys. You can have up to nine keys at any given time. To the right of your Turbo Meter are your Potions. You can have up to nine potions at any given time. Inbetween the name of your character and your Turbo Meter is your Experience Level. Every time you gain an Experience Level, a scroll will appear over your character in the actual game, saying "level [your new experience level] experience." (ex. level 65 experience) Also, a deep voice says "[your color] [your class] has gained a level." (ex. "Blue Knight has gained a level.") At the lower left part of your section of the HUD, is your Treasure. Picking up Treasure increases this amount, and buying items at the shop decreases it. At the lower right part of your section of the HUD, is your Health. Eating or buying Food increases this amount, and being attacked by enemies or eating Poison Food will decrease this amount. Whenever you pick up any item, a picture of the item you picked up will slide up from the bottom of your section of the HUD, and cover it. After a second or two, it will go away, and your original HUD display will be restored. =============================== E. Portals =============================== Portals are the little round things that you see in each Realm in Sumner's Tower. These circular pads transport you to different parts of the land. Portals that are in a certain Realm in Sumner's Tower will transport you to a Level that corresponds with the Realm that you're in. For example, If you're in the Forest Realm, when you enter a portal, you're obviously going to enter a level that has something to do with the Forest Realm. Active Portals are constantly glowing. The Portal used to exit a level is always glowing, as well as the first Portal in a Realm in Sumner's Tower. When your character stands on an active Portal, a big beam will emerge from the Portal, and ascend towards the sky. After a few seconds, your character will turn white, and minimize in a spiral motion, and enter the Portal. Once a level is completed, the next level in the Realm in Sumner's Tower will be activated. Inactive Portals don't glow. They just sit there, waiting to be activated. Obviously, inactive Portals aren't accessible. ------------------------------- =============================== IV) YOUR CHARACTER =============================== ------------------------------- Areas A. Battle Strategies B. Gaining Levels =============================== A. Battle Strategies =============================== When in battle, always look for a way to destroy the enemy generators. This will prevent the creation of more enemies for you to kill. But, if you're trying to gain levels, what you might want to do is let them spawn enemies so you can kill them and get experience from them, especially if these enemies are advanced grunts. You'll get TONS of experience from these guys, plus it will be even easier if you have a Familiar along your side. Strafing is probably the best strategy that I know of. You can easily evade enemies, while at the same time, killing them. To strafe, press and hold (RiT) and on the (LHJ) move in the direction you want to go. You will walk one way, and face another. This is especially effective on bosses. When bosses throw some kind of item at you, you can easily and swiftly evade the attack, and at the same time, kill the boss. For example, the Yeti likes to throw little ice chunks at you. Mastering the strafing technique can easily solve that problem. The Yeti does chuck the chunks of ice pretty fast, but you should have enough time to evade them. If you haven't mastered the strafing technique yet, you can always Guard. Guarding against bosses is very helpful. Since bosses' attacks inflict VERY much damage, making those attacks almost ineffective by guarding, is a very beneficial strategy. Guarding is one of the easiest strategies to master, so it won't be a tough task to get used to it. Using this technique can save thousands of Gold. When you finish off a boss, they give out a pretty hefty ransom, along with a Shard. Most likely, you'll use most of that money buying health. If you master the guarding technique, it may take a little longer to kill the Boss, but the Boss wouldn't have inflicted that much damage, so you can use the money that you would be spending on health, to spend on more important things like Attribute Points, or Special Items. When you're not facing a boss, strafing is still an effective strategy. Run side to side firing in the direction of an enemy, and you'll end up killing a whole bunch more enemies. The enemies will try to follow you back and forth, therefore making it take longer for them to walk to you, giving you more time to kill them. Think about it: If you just sit there and fire at the enemies, the enemies will only have to walk in a straight line towards you. If you strafe from side to side, the enemies will walk back and forth trying to catch you, and end up walking in a zig-zag pattern, therefore taking longer to reach you to try to kill you, and it will give you more time to kill them. When you have enemies coming straight for you from their generators, the obvious thing to do, is to kill them, before they grow too large in numbers. There are multiple ways to do so, and i'm going to state them in order of which you should do first, to which you should do last. First is your Turbo Attack. If you've got it full and flashing pink, use it, and point it in the direction of the enemies' generators. If you only have a half-full Turbo Meter DON'T USE IT! That would definitely be wasting valuable Turbo Energy. What you'll want to do if you don't have a full Turbo Meter is throw a Potion. Throw a Potion inbetween the enemy closest to you, and the enemies' generators. If your Magic is strong enough, it will most likely kill all enemies in your way, along with their generators. If you do not have a full Turbo Meter, and you have no Potions, just start hacking away at them. If you're above level 30, this will be a relatively easy task. Your Familiar will pack quite a punch at the enemies. If you don't feel like wasting a Potion, or your Turbo Energy, just start hacking away at them. You'll still kill them very easily. Another way to do this is to Charge at them. This will very easily kill your enemies, especially if your character is a Warrior, Minotaur, Dwarf, or Ogre. When you have enemies on all sides, attacking you rapidly, you obviously want to make them stop killing you, and the only way to do so is to kill them. There are multiple ways to do so, and i'm going to state them in order of which you should do first, to which you should do last. First is definitely your Turbo Attack. If you've got it full and flashing pink, use it, and point it in the direction of the enemies' generators. If you only have it half-full use it, and at least wipe out the guys around you, then you can run for safety. If your Turbo Meter is totally drained, then resort to Magic. If you have a potion or two use it to at least kill the weaker enemies and knock down the strong ones. Once everybody is dead, or knocked down, run for safety. Or, you can use your Potion as a shield and plow your way through your enemies into a safer area. If your Turbo Meter is empty, and you have no potions, try this: Start attacking using (-A-), then start attacking using (-X-). If done correctly, your character will do some kind of combo, and kill all foes nearby. The only character I have used, and done this with, is the Knight. The Knight will kneel down and little spines will come out all around him. I call this the Shock Circle. The color of the Shock Circle will depend upon the color of your character. If it didn't work, try it again. You'll get it sooner or later. This combo is almost exactly like using your half-full Turbo Attack. Once you master this combo, your chances of dying in a situation like that will start to become VERY slim. Using this strategy is also very effective against Golems and Generals. Going right up to them and using this technique will make them MUCH easier to kill. Only two or three of these combo attacks will KILL them. It takes around 15 regular attacks to do so, so if you're in a time rush, this is the technique to use. When your character uses this technique, it will most likely knock down the enemy General or Golem, giving you some extra time to give them a good few extra whacks. When you're battling a Gargoyle, the best advice I have for you is to TAKE COVER! Take cover behind a stack of boxes, a wall, or anything you can find that does not crumble when hit. Every once in a while peek out the side and shoot the Gargoyle a couple times. Eventually, you'll kill it. If you try the "half-full Turbo Attack" combo you'll lose very much life, very fast. If you use this technique, the Gargoyle will not fall down, giving you extra time to attack him. This is basically suicide. If you get up right next to the Gargoyle, most likely, it'll use its breath attack, dealing out about 40 damage or so. This can really add up. I recommend using the strafing technique also. You'll probably get hit a few times by its attacks, but you'll kill him much faster than taking cover. The Gargoyle's main attack, shooting some sort of elemental ball, will do around 23 or 25 damage. =============================== B. Gaining Levels =============================== When your character fights, each time he hits an enemy gives him a small amount of experience. Every time your character gains a level, it takes more experience to gain another level, than it did the previous time. For example, If your character is at level 20, it may take him about 500 experience points for him to gain a level. Once he reaches level 21, It will take AT LEAST another 501 experience points for him to gain another level. Reasonably, this would take about 510-530 experience points. The more difficult the enemy your killing is, the more experience you will get for each hit. Every time your character gains a level, he gains 5 attribute points for each attribute, and 100 health is added to his Max Health. To help boost your attribute points faster, you can buy them at the Shop. (10 attribute points for any attribute costs 1000 Gold.) These are the attributes: -Strength: Strength is obviously, your character's actual strength. Strength determines how much damage your character will inflict on enemies, or your teammates. (If your the mean, evil, nasty, dishonorable type that likes to kill your teammates when friendly fire is on...lmao) The higher your Strength, the easier it is to kill enemies and/or teammates. Classes that excel in this field are the Warrior, Minotaur, Dwarf, and Ogre. -Armor: Armor is yet another obvious one. Armor helps determine how much damage your enemies or teammates inflict on you. The higher your Armor, the longer it takes your enemies and/or teammates to kill you. Classes that excel in this field are the Valkyrie, Falconess, Knight, and Unicorn. -Magic: To put it simply, Magic is Potion power. If you have high attribute points in Magic, that means that your Potions will inflict more damage, and when you use them regularly, ( pressing (-Y-)) the wave of the Potion will go farther. The higher your Magic, the easier it is to kill enemies and/or teammates with Potions. Classes that excel in this field are the Wizard, Jackal, Sorceress, and Medusa. -Speed: Speed is also a simple one to figure out. How fast you run is basically all it is. But, this attribute can be alot more helpful than you may think. When your character has low health and is facing a bunch of enemies, or a Gargoyle or something, the faster he can run away from them, the better! The higher your Speed, the easier it is to evade enemies when you need to. Classes that excel in this field are the Archer, Tigress, Jester, and Hyena. Every 10 Experience Levels your character gains, he changes in appearance. Whether its a new garment, an upgraded weapon, or he just looks bigger and badder, he changes every 10 levels. At level 10, 20, 40, 60, and 80, your character gets new titles, depending on his class. For example, a level 60-79 Knight; His title would be a Champion.
