When you find the first tank, you probably have a nuke, and at the bottom of the screen the game tells you to get up close to the tank and plant the nuke. DON'T DO IT! the tank will kill you before you get close enough, so just stay back and fire at the turret with the ripper. it will destroy it and destroy all the rockets fired at you the second they're fired and help destroy the tank.
