Welcome to the zombie infested world of Left 4 Dead 2! If you have played
the previous Left 4 Dead game you’ll know Expert mode isn’t exactly a walk in
a park. In this guide I will be walking through tips and tricks on how to
survive Expert mode in Left 4 Dead 2. This is not a walkthrough on how to
complete the campaigns.
*I will include some notes about Realism Expert as well.

Weapons...weapons...with a wide variety of weapons to choose to from which
one do you pick? Well the answer is simple my friend. Choose the one you’re
most comfortable using. You’re more likely to survive with a gun you can use
compared to another gun that may be faster, stronger, etc. Keep in mind each
class has their advantages.
The main primary classes are Assault, Shotgun and Sniper.
Secondary classes are Handguns, Magnum, and Melee weapon.
Due to the fact that disposable weapons (Grenade launcher, M60, Chainsaw)
can only be used temporarily, I won’t go over them.
Below is the pros and cons of each class.

Healing items

Adrenaline shot – These shots give you a temporary boost in speed and health.
A good time to use it is when you or a teammate is slowing the pace of the
team. Another effective way to use it is by reviving one or more incapped
teammates under the effects of adrenaline. Use the shot and you’ll be able to
revive a teammate in half the time.
Pain pills – Pills restore 50 health points. Unless your health is below 50,
it’s best to give it to another teammate that probably needs it more.
Be sure to let your teammate know you’re giving it to them, otherwise they
may accidentally use it. Do not hand them to an AI survivor if their health
is near 50, the AI will automatically use Pills and shots given the chance.
The best time to use them is when fighting a Tank. However, if your screen
is grayed out, it might be a good time to use it regardless, unless of course
someone is carrying a defibrillator.
Defibrillator – Defib units are used to revive fallen survivors from the dead.
They come in handy when playing Expert, particularly with Realism enabled due
to the absence of spawn rooms. So you’ve stumbled upon a defib, do you take
it or not? There’s no right answer, it’s up to you whether you think you’ll
need it before the reaching the safe room. Personally I’ll grab it if my health
is 60 or below and use my First aid. It’s always a good idea to have at least
ONE person in your team carry it. If you’re the only human player or playing
Realism this is a must.
First Aid – First aid kits restore up to 80% of the player’s current health.
It is best not to use these until you have been incapped at least 2 times
unless you’re about to fight a Tank. If there are extra health items use them
first before using your First aid. You can also avoid death by using it when
your screen is grayed out, this will reset the number of incaps, allowing you to
go down 3 more times. First aid kits are rare to find, therefore it is
absolutely important to conserve these.

Bombs
==================
Boomer bile – Boomer bile aka “Bile jars” are used to distract a hoard for a
set period of time. It works similarly to the Pipe bomb with one exception.
It only distracts a hoard and will NOT kill them. That’s not to say it doesn’t
have its advantages over the Pipe. The bile jar distracts hoards for a longer
period of time than Pipes. This allows your to move pass them, revive an
incapped teammate, freely shoot zombies, etc. This is essential for events that
require alerting a hoard. Sometimes buying more time is more important than
killing zombies.
Pipe bomb – Pipe bombs work the same way as Bile jars, both are used to distract
a hoard away from you. After a short period of time the pipe will
explode killing off any zombies surrounding it. If you’re playing with more
than one human player it is good to pick up one of each. The Boomer bile has
a slight advantage over the Pipe.
Molotov – Molotovs seem to be the least popular bomb people pick up. If you’re
thinking that too, you’re wrong. Molotovs are just as important as pipes and
bile bombs, if not more important. It is always a good idea to carry this in
case a Tank decides to crash your party. Tanks can be burned with a Molly and
easily killed. For more info on Tanks see section LD07.
Gas Can – A Gas can isn’t a bomb, but it basically acts as a Molotov. When
there aren’t any Mollys in sight, this will do just fine. Don’t just shoot
them because they’re fun to shoot, hold on to them and take it with you.
You’d be surprised how helpful it can be. The best time to use it is for
Tanks or events that alert a hoard. If someone is already carrying a Molly,
using it during an incoming attack is a good idea too.

|   [LD03] – Common Mistakes         |
|------------------------------------|
I've seen too many people make the same mistakes in game over and over again.
I will go through the most common I often encounter when playing. These are
things you should avoid doing.
(#1 SOLO SPEED RUNNING)
Yes, I'm talking about the guy who runs off by himself thinking he's going to
zoom pass the stage and into the safe room. If you're him, STOP yourself now.
First off, you're not Superman, you have a slim chance of surviving on your
own. The AI Director purposely targets and single out speed runners. You're
not helping out the team by running away from them. This is a co-operative
game, if you want to try this, play with bots. Okay so maybe it's not you, if
your teammate is speed running by himself/herself, tell them to stop or
threaten to kick em out of the game.
(#2 ABANDONING TEAMMATES BEHIND)
Oh noez my teammates are down! I can't save you in time, I'm going to make a
run for it. This is a no no. Leaving your teammates to die is equally as bad
as speed running. Your teammates are an asset to surviving. You need them and
they need you. More men = more fire power. In general you should not leave a
teammate to die, if possible shoot/melee the hoard and attempt to save them.
I am aware that sometimes the inevitable happens and there's no way you could
reach the survivor. For example, in The Coaster (Dark Carnival) once you drop
down the ramp of the roller coaster you can't go back up. If that's the case,
you can either leave them or start over again, but it's not your fault if you
choose not to. If you decide to keep moving you'll just have to progress
through the game without them. Now there are a few exceptions where leaving a
teammate to die is acceptable. See section LD04 Campaign Tips.
(#3 WASTING HEALTH ITEMS)
W00t I found some pills/adrenaline/First aid! I'm going to use one and keep
one for myself! Please don't. Be considerate of your teammates. If you have
50 or more health points, give it to another survivor that has less health
than you. You should only use it if your health is below 50 OR if there is at
least one extra item for you. I like to exchange items with my teammates.
For example, if someone heals me with their First aid I'll give them my pills
or adrenaline if I have one. Refrain from using items when unnecessary. It is
important to share with your teammates as well. Use health items wisely
because the supply is scarce.
(#4 WASTING BOMBS)
Like health items, bombs should be conserved. They should be used to deal
with hoards and Tanks. If you find bombs make sure your teammates pick them
up. If everyone already has bombs in their inventory you're free to use one
and pick the new one up. You should still let your teammates know you're using
an item. I have seen people throw bombs, literally one after another.
Here's an example, if someone throws a Bile jar and attracts a hoard,
DO NOT throw your Molotov into that crowd. Instead shoot them or melee them.
Why waste a bomb at such an unnecessary time?

--[Pre-game adjustments]--
Before playing the game, you'll need to make some minor adjustments. In the
option screen turn on FULL CAPTIONS. This is VITAL. It will tell you on
screen if an incoming attack is headed your way or if an SI is present.
This one is optional, but if you feel that the sensitivity is too high or low
change it to your liking. If you're fine with default settings keep it that
way.
--[Familiarize yourself]--
To beat the game you've got to know the game. Be sure to play each campaign
at least once or twice on either Easy or Normal. Keep tabs on the locations
of spawn rooms, weapons & items, SI spawn locations, etc.
To sum it up, know where to go and your objective in each stage.
--[Leaders & Followers]--
When playing Expert it is important to have a Leader take the reins and lead
the group. A Leader is absolutely necessary as they direct and control the tempo
of the game. The lack of leadership will only mean chaos and friendly firing. A
Leader can warn teammates of SI, Tanks and Witches if they see them first. If
you're the leader take things slowly don't try to speed run through the stage.
Otherwise one of your teammates will most likely be attacked without your
knowledge. You should also find secure places for your teammates to huddle in
case of an incoming attack. The Leader should be comfortable with spotting SI
and having regular infected come at them. Throughout the game they will be the
most vulnerable since the infected tend to attack the closest survivor within
their radius. Therefore, a good defensive player would be the ideal candidate.
If you're one of the followers, you need to stay close and stay on defense. If
you hear an SI nearby check behind you to see if they're coming from behind.
Your Leader has the front covered, so the Followers should watch the back and
sides. When leaving a room always close doors behind you to prevent the SI
from stalking your group. When they attempt to break open doors you can hear
them scratching or punching. This will alert you and your team you're being
followed. Finally, do not wander too far from your Leader/Group, a lone
survivor is the ideal target for SI.
--[Essential items]-
Here is my recommended list of items at least one member of your team should
carry at all times when possible. Items are not listed in the order of
importance:
- Molotov
- Boomer Bile
- Melee weapon
- Defibrillator
- First Aid
That's basically my setup with bots. Molotovs are priority over Bile to
combat the Tank. When playing with friends you'll be able to carry more stuff.
--[Allowing teammates to die]--
Earlier I mentioned that there are some exceptions to leaving a teammate to
die. By that I don't mean literally run away from them. Read below for some
examples.
(Scenario #1): If a teammate is incapped near the safe room, it's better to
let them die. What? I'm horrible for that? No, actually if you allow them to
die, they'll come back with 50 health points the next round. This is only
recommended if you are certain you can make it to the safe room without them.
Be sure to pick up any useful items from their dead body if you can. Don't
waste your defib unit, save that for Scenario #3.
(Scenario #2): Great all four of us made it to the safe room! But we're all
really busted up. The person with the most health should incap each survivor
one at a time. Let’s say you’re the person with the most health, have your
teammates help you kill off each survivor inside the safe room. DO NOT close the
door while someone is incapped unless there is a threat outside. This works the
same way as Scenario #1, but when they spawn the next round everything they
dropped will carry over.
(Scenario #3): Got a defib? Awesome. If you're about to alert a hoard, and a
teammate is low on health it's a good idea to kill him/her and defib them.
This is a good strategy if none of you are carrying any health items. The
newly revived survivor will have 50 health points and their number of incaps
will be reset to zero. It's better to defib him/her when it's clear rather
than wait for them to be slapped to death. At this point, it will be extremely
difficult to defib them with a hoard coming at you nonstop.
(Scenario #4): I already mentioned this, but there are certain locations in
some stages that will not allow a person to reach a fallen survivor. If this
is the case you can either leave them behind or kill yourself and start over.
Make sure your teammates are okay with you leaving them if you do choose to
continue playing. Keep in mind if you're not near the end of the stage, they
will respawn in the nearest safe room. If they're aiming to get an achievement
you might want to just start over.
*I also want to note in Realism mode survivors DO NOT respawn until the next
round.
--[Key to victory]--
The recipe for a successful game is playing with common sense + decent
shooting skills. If you have bad aim or guilty of friendly firing often,
you'll need some practice before stepping foot into Expert mode. Yes accidents
happen, but continuous friendly fire will eventually kill your team. For
example if you pick up a combat shotty, it incaps in 1-2 shots. Let's say you
got trigger happy and accidentally shot someone. Do it 3 more times and they're
a goner. Get the picture? Don't fret though! No one goes from Easy to Expert,
that's why there's two more levels of difficulty in between. Advanced mode is a
good way to transition into Expert.
Now that you've got the basic idea of how to play, it's time to learn about
the infected and how to deal with them.

|   [LD05] – Special Infected (SI)   |
|------------------------------------|
The Hunter, Smoker and Boomer make a return in L4D2, in addition to that 3 new
special infected have been added. Those are the Charger, Jockey and Spitter.
It is important to have knowledge of their primary attacks as well as clues that
giveaway their presence. Pay attention to the music in game, as each SI has
their own unique theme.

Multiple SI can spawn at once, so you may hear their theme back to back.
*When playing Realism mode the SI will NOT have a red outline when attacking
teammates

|   [LD05.1] – Hunter                |
|------------------------------------|
Hunters are both deadly and silent. The Hunter can stalk you without making
any sounds. They also lurk in the shadows and blend in quite well! For this
reason, it is important to approach doorways slowly. Never walk against the
wall; if they’re on the other side of the room they may be able to scratch
you, causing you to lose a good chunk of health. Listen for their distinctive
growl, when you hear that, it means they’re in pounce position waiting for a
survivor. If you happened to get pounced on, your teammates must immediately
kill him or knock him off to prevent any damage. The best way to kill him is
to melee shove (LT for 360; Right click for PC) him first, back away and shoot.
Don’t stand too closely after you shove him SI recover fairly quickly and can
sneak a scratch/punch before they die. Melee only recommended when a teammate
has been pounced on.

|   [LD05.2] – Smoker                |
|------------------------------------|
Smokers have exceptionally long range with their tongue. Listen for a cough and
be on the lookout for a green mist. They like to appear at stairways, windows,
and behind survivors. When they pull someone they scream, so keep your eyes and
ears open and be ready to free a fellow survivor if necessary. If you happened
to get pulled, immediately try to shoot him. If you’re fast enough you may be
able to free yourself. If you get pulled within melee distance, well what are
you waiting for? Melee that sucker! You’ll also free yourself this way. Melee
recommended anytime.

|   [LD05.3] – Boomer                |
|------------------------------------|
Boomers are extremely slow SI, but do not underestimate them, they can wreak
havoc. On Expert they are intelligent and will deliberately walk directly into
your path inside buildings. Since they may appear in front of you, never shoot
them, even if they vomit on you! This is exactly what the AI Director wants.
Instead of shooting simply shove them away. Remember that You may have been
vomited on, but that doesn’t mean the other survivors have. Killing him or her
can cause the whole team to be temporarily blind. The best way to kill them is
to shoot from a distance to avoid spilling the bile on you and your teammates.
If you’re too late and you get bombarded with a hoard, see section LD06 for
Hoard tips. Melee not recommended.
|------------------------------------|
|   [LD05.4] – Charger               |
|------------------------------------|
Chargers are quick and extremely powerful. Don’t let their slow running fool
you, if you’re within range you won’t be able to dodge their charge. Charges
have the ability to bowl over the entire team of survivors. Like Hunters they
can quickly incapacitate and kill a survivor. To avoid this, grouping up is not
recommended until the Charger is dead. Listen for heavy footsteps and yelling,
these are signs that tell you he’s nearby. Right before charging they scream, if
that happens check to see if the survivors are okay. The best way to kill a
charger is to shoot when in sight. As soon as he charges, either jump out of the
way or side step. Once he hits a wall you’ll have the opportunity to shoot him.
If a survivor gets caught in a charge attack or punched, use a melee weapon and
quickly kill him. Shoving will not work on Chargers. Melee only recommended when
a teammate is getting ground pounded.

|   [LD05.5] – Jockey                |
|------------------------------------|
Jockeys are the smallest of the SI. They are fairly weak but one of the
fastest SI on foot. When pounced on, the survivor becomes helpless and will
move in the direction the Jockey takes them, because of this they can quickly
incap a survivor. To kill them, listen for their (psychotic) laugh. Keep your
distance and fire away. He has more hops than you think! Even though they don’t
deal too much damage per second, remember that it doesn’t take long for him to
incap someone on Expert. Unlike other SI, they’ve got pea brains so they tend to
stick around rather than flee. Now would be a good time to melee.

|   [LD05.6] – Spitter               |
|------------------------------------|
Spitters are slow moving kamikaze freaks! They attack by spitting acid on
survivors and scratching. They appear just about anywhere and will sacrifice
themselves just to spit at you. Because they attack randomly they can spit
at a distance or nearby. The most distinguishable part about the Spitter is
the acid clinging to her body. She also leaves a small trail of acid behind her.
Look for this so you have an idea of where she is. Since her spit attack is wide
enough to potentially incap the entire team, grouping up is not recommended
until the Spitter is dead. Fortunately, these pests are easy to
kill; it only takes a few bullets to drop her. Melee not recommended, Spitters
release acid after death.

|   [LD06] – Hoards                  |
|------------------------------------|
So you're faced with an incoming attack, what do you do? Believe it or not
hoards are easier to deal with than you think. First let me explain the most
common events where an incoming attack will take place. They appear on 5
different occasions in Left 4 Dead 2.
+ When a survivor has been vomited on a Boomer
+ When a survivor has been attacked by a Witch
+ Shooting or stepping on alarmed vehicles
+ Special events that trigger hoards (i.e. shutting off alarms, Finales, etc)
+ Random locations. The AI Director will throw them out when a team spends a
long time at a certain area (about 1-2 minutes)
The first thing to remember is to keep your cool. Although it may seem
overwhelming at first, patience is the key. If you have a Pipe bomb, feel
free to use it here. If not, read on. Find a safe corner or room and huddle
your team together (exercise caution if a Spitter or Charger is present).
The person with the melee weapon should be in front crouching, I will refer
to them as the "melee player." Assuming you are the "melee player" anyone
using a gun needs to stand behind you and fire to avoid friendly fire. You
are obviously the most vulnerable, therefore it is important to practice
alternating between shoving and attacking.
Unlike L4D1, survivors cannot shove the infected relentlessly here. Shoving
too much will result in a "cool down" period. When the hoard comes, you need
to first time your attack, then shove away any infected that were not
immediately killed. You only need to shove once or twice then attack. Follow the
pattern attack, shove, attack, shove, etc. If no SI spawn, taking care of a
hoard will be a breeze. Just remember timing is everything! Your team will take
little to no damage by doing this. It works very well if executed correctly. I
suggest practicing this method on Normal and move onto Advanced,
then finally Expert.

|   [LD07] – Tanks & Witches         |

Tank
==================
With Full Captions on you should see the caption “Tank Growl” when a Tank is
nearby. That basically means to the Tank is real close...prepare yourself. The
Followers should stay back and allow the Leader to trigger the event. As soon as
one person sees the Tank or attacks him he’ll come chasing you. Once that
happens everybody RUN! Yes, you read correct, RUN! No, you’re not being a wuss
for running, in fact you’re playing strategically. The further you are away from
the Tank, the higher your chances are of surviving and killing him.
[Method #1]
Remember the Molotov I said to carry earlier? Hopefully you didn’t use it yet,
because now is the perfect time to light this monster up. Equip the Molotov and
distance yourself, when you’re far enough to avoid burning yourself and
teammates throw the Molly. Here’s a tip, throw in FRONT of the Tank and not
directly at him. I can’t count how many times I’ve seen people throw it at him,
only to see the Tank actually move pass the flames. The Tank moves very fast,
therefore you need to throw it in FRONT of him and allow him to moon walk into
the fire.
Throw it when you’ve got a good clear view, using it when you’re unsure is not
a good idea and may be a waste of a Molly. If your teammates are struggling, and
you’re having a hard time getting a clear shot you may have to just burn your
teammates. Once he’s on fire the Tank will slowly burn to death, it takes about
30 seconds before he’ll die. In the meantime, you’ll need to avoid him, stay
away from moveable objects such as bumper cars, dumpsters, etc. Shooting the
Tank will also cause him to slow down in speed. If a teammate is down don’t try
to revive them up unless another teammate is luring the Tank away from them.
[Method #2]
No Molly in hand? No worries you can still kill him the old fashion way with
guns, but it will be more difficult. The same rules apply, stay away from him
and keep your distance. Shoot him from far away and run around non-moveable
objects in the stage. The Tank can be faked out by moving in a circle while
keeping your eyes on him. Don’t get too close to him otherwise he’ll do a 180
and cut you off. If the Tank picks up rubble, find shelter behind large objects
such as Trucks. If there are no objects around, stand behind a pole and shoot,
when he throws the rubble it will most likely break in half causing no harm to
you. In time he will die, but this method is harder to pull off, partly because
it isn’t just a waiting game your bullets actually count.
Pain pills come in handy because you can quickly restore your health within a
couple of seconds. At a time like this using your First aid might not be
possible. Pills not only give you temporary life, your speed will also be
restored.

Witch
==================
There are two kinds of Witches in Left 4 Dead 2, the first kind is the normal
immobile Witch. The second kind is the wandering Witch. Most Witches can be
avoided, and SHOULD be avoided given the chance. Unfortunately sometimes the
AI Director is an ass and will deliberately place her in hallways and paths
you need to cross.
There’s two ways to approach a Witch, but first and foremost, TURN OFF
FLASHLIGHTS.
[Method #1]
The first method is to cr0wn her with a shotty. To cr0wn a Witch you must shoot
her in the head (headshot only). If done correctly the Witch will die in one
shot. You can cr0wn both the immobile Witch and the Wandering Witch. I only
recommend doing this if you’re confident in your cr0wning skills. If you miss on
Expert you’re as good as dead.
[Method #2]
The other way is to have each survivor quickly run pass her, ideally one at a
time but no more than 2 survivors should try to sneak by. By this time she’ll be
pissed off and you can hear it too. Wait for her to resume sobbing then run pass
her just like the first survivors did.
The consequence for disturbing a Witch is a one hit kill to a survivor.
