When customizing your weapons prior to a mission I've found that many have no way to change the weapon. All I see is a square that says "FREE SLOT" What the heck is that for and how can I use it ? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

This is bull**** because I've played this level fifty times now and still can't beat him, I've tried dodging, throwing grenades and firing box after box with my machine gun and still can't kill him. Any other suggestions please? What a *** ****ing game.
