How do you open up the cheat section?

I go into the cheat section and will not allow me to type anything. Is there something you have to do ahead of time prior to being able to type in a cheat. It stays stuck on the word cheat, highlighted in red. Do you have to hit a goal, a rank or a certain score? I'm trying to get an edge on my son, help me if you can.
